How to Become a VTuber

A step-by-step starter guide: pick an avatar, set up your software, and go live.

Reactive avatar for OBS · one-time · Mac & Windows

Becoming a VTuber is more approachable than it looks. Strip away the intimidating parts and it comes down to five steps: get a character, make it move, connect a mic, capture it in OBS, and go live. Here is how to do each one.

Step 1: Choose your avatar style

Decide how much effort you want to invest up front. A PNG avatar is the fastest and cheapest way in and needs no rigging. A rigged 2D model looks smoother but takes real time to build or money to commission. Most first-time VTubers start with PNG and upgrade later.

Step 2: Get your character

Draw one, commission one, buy a premade model, or use a character bundled with your software. You only need a few frames to begin: a closed mouth and an open mouth cover the basics, and a blink adds life.

The quickest way to step 5.

Step 3: Set up your software

For a rigged model you would use a tracking app like VTube Studio with a webcam. For a PNG avatar you use a tool like StreamSprite: assign your frames, choose your microphone, and it moves the mouth to your voice automatically. Voice focus keeps background noise and keyboard clicks from triggering it.

Step 4: Add it to OBS

  1. 1Start your avatar overlay so the character is on screen.
  2. 2In OBS, add a Window Capture (or Game Capture) source.
  3. 3Select the overlay window, then position it over your gameplay.
  4. 4Use a transparent capture, or a green-screen mode with a Chroma Key filter.

Step 5: Go live and grow

Hit go live and start streaming. From here it is the same as any creator: be consistent, lean into your character's personality, and post clips to short-form platforms. Your avatar is the thing viewers will remember you by, so give it a personality worth following.

Skip the rigging. Be live in 5 minutes.
