What Is a VTuber?

A complete beginner's guide to virtual streamers: what they are, how they work, and how to become one.

Reactive avatar for OBS · one-time · Mac & Windows

A VTuber, short for Virtual YouTuber, is a content creator who appears as an animated character instead of on camera. The avatar mirrors the person in real time: the mouth moves as they speak, the eyes blink, and the character reacts. The audience watches the character, while a real person performs behind it.

VTuber = Virtual YouTuber. A creator who streams or posts as a 2D or 3D character rather than showing their face.

How a VTuber avatar works

Every VTuber setup has three parts. First, the art: the character itself. Second, the driver: something that makes the art move, which is usually face tracking for rigged models, or your voice for PNG-style avatars. Third, the output: the avatar is placed on a transparent layer and captured into streaming software like OBS, so it sits on top of your game or screen.

The main types of VTuber

  • 2D rigged: layered art rigged in Live2D and driven by a webcam. Smooth and expressive.
  • 3D: a full model driven by body and face tracking. Great for full-body movement and dancing.
  • PNGTuber: a few static PNG frames that swap to your voice. The fastest and cheapest way in.

Why people become VTubers

Some do it for privacy, streaming without ever showing their face. Others do it for branding and personality: a memorable character your viewers recognise instantly. Many simply feel more confident and creative performing as a character. The barrier used to be cost and complexity, but PNG-style tools have made it accessible to anyone with a microphone.

Famous VTubers

The format was popularised by Kizuna AI around 2016, and grew massively through agencies like hololive and Nijisanji. Today most VTubers are independent creators on Twitch, YouTube and TikTok, many of them using simple 2D or PNG avatars.

Frequently asked questions

Is a VTuber the same as a streamer?+

A VTuber is a streamer or video creator who uses an animated avatar instead of a face cam. The content is the same; the on-screen presence is a character.

Do VTubers show their face?+

No. The whole point is that a character represents you. Many VTubers never reveal their face, which is a big part of the appeal.

How much does it cost to start?+

You can start for very little. A PNG avatar app like StreamSprite is a one-time $20, and you only need a microphone you probably already own.
